Notes for John CANDY

The following is an extract from a book specifically about Somerset migrants to Victoria. Mentioned on page 54 of Florence Chuk's book 'The Somerset Years' (Ballarat: Pennard Hill, 1987):

"John and Sarah Candy were two of the five children of James Candy, a stonemason, and his wife Sarah, who had married at Frome in 1814. When their children were born, they were living at Sheppards Barton. This part of Frome was named for the Sheppard family, the most prosperous clothiers in a town dependent upon the woollen industry. Masons like James Candy had been attracted to Frome in earlier years as the city expanded. New churches, large homes for wealthy clothiers, and simpler housing for workers had created work for builders, who used local forest marble in much of their work.

John was baptised at Frome on October 23 1822 and Sarah on February 26 1825. John Found work with Mr Walsh of Melbourne for 30 pounds p.a. with rations. After his marriage in the early fifties, John Candy settled in Western Victoria."
