FLOWER people in Frome
This file is a compilation of FLOWER names in and around Frome made during 2005, many of which have been donated by other kind Listers. Others have been extracted from files already on this ‘FromeResearch’ website, so there will be some redundancy. Some individuals are shown more than once depending on the number of sources found for them.
They are ordered by birth date (or probable birth date where extracted e.g. from a marriage record, in which case an estimated age of around 20+ years has been made). Common abbreviations have been used wherever possible, including;
Y = ‘Yes, born in Somerset’ for 1841 Census information
N = ‘No, born outside Somerset’ “ “ “
btp = born this parish
> = probable date up to . . .
(X) = signed register with an ‘X’ rather than writing name
This is very much ‘work in progress’. I will aim to develop families as time and opportunity permit; references to e.g. (F x) will be to family compilations (x = ‘number’ of family) which I will list at the end of this file. It will be clear that FLOWER people inter-married with various Frome families so some developments through history will be under other surnames.
The FLOWER name could be derived from the gardening ‘flower’, according to other researchers elsewhere, but the explanation I like best is that it comes from Norman French as the name of those who prepared the flights on arrows which allow the arrow to ‘flow’ through the air. This is relevant to my probable ancestor Catherine, who came from Ireland before 1841. Irish FLOWERs are said to be among the English and Scottish Planter families who went to Ireland after Cromwell’s activities, to cultivate the land on behalf of the English Crown.
‘Brick walls’ - At the end of this file, I have described some questions regarding my immediate ancestors which are presenting current research difficulties.
Contributions to this collection are always welcome. I can be contacted on any aspect of this file including corrections of my errors, questions, and discussion on; flodon@fireflyuk.net
My thanks are due to David SMART for putting the file up on this ‘FromeResearch’ website. This site is a companion to the ‘Frome’ mailing list which can be found on: Frome@yahoogroups.com - try it, you will like it.

‘Brick walls’ in my own research;
‘FAMILY 1’ below is my likely line of descent via Frederic. Two areas of difficulty have been difficult to overcome;
Catherine – she has no clear origin, being described only as born in ‘Ireland‘on the 1841 and later census records. She is likely to originate from one of the Planter families installed in Ireland by Charles II to cultivate the land after the ravages of Oliver CROMWELL. She may be the daughter of John. He was born in Somerset but his two sons, John and William, were not. Could he have spent time in Ireland when they were born, alongside FLOWER relatives there? John appears to be the one who was in 2nd Dragoon Guards between 1806 and 1828. This would help to explain why his two sons were born away from Frome. Ireland is a large area in which to find three births. County Longford is one area where FLOWER families were known to live and farm but I have found no firm evidence of Catherine, John or William there so far. Catherine’s arrival in John’s household it undated; could it have been after the death of Bridget FLOWER in 1840? Did she arrive to keep house for her father? There is no firm evidence so far of John’s marriage to Bridget. This is an area for further research.
Frederic – Catherine’s son seems to have worked in service in middle class households all his adult life. He was in Bath as a footman just after the time of his mother’s death in 1871. I have found no record for him in the 1881 Census; was he in family service abroad? – or was he simply missed from the record? In his marriage record in 1894 and on the birth certificates of his three children he is described as ‘Frederick Charles FLOWER’. On his marriage certificate his father is described as ‘Charles FLOWER (deceased) – Cab Proprietor’. This is quite specific. Yet his birth certificate to the unmarried Catherine makes no mention of a father and no Bastardy record has been traced so far, although he was born in the Workhouse, suggesting that Catherine had no other support at this time. If Charles was real he remains to be identified.
